NCCU inaugurates first IA institute building of an HBCU in the USA
North Carolina Central University (NCCU) inaugurated the first building dedicated to an artificial intelligence institute of a historically black university (HBCU) in the United States.

North Carolina Central University (NCCU), one of the most respected black universities in the United States, opened the country's first building to house an artificial intelligence institute of an HBCU. The founding director of the institute, Siobahn Day Grady, stressed that the initiative establishes a structure for what ethical, responsible and human-centered AI can mean in higher education and beyond. The milestone represents a historic turn to representativeness in technology.
The newly opened building consolidates the NCCU as the first HBCU to have an artificial intelligence institute with its own space. The site is designed to house laboratories, classrooms and research focused on developing AI solutions. More than infrastructure, the institute is born with a clear mission: to train professionals capable of thinking technology from an ethical and inclusive perspective. According to Siobahn Day Grady, the goal is to “establish a structure for what the ethical, responsible and human-centered AI may seem in higher education and beyond.”.
The HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) were created to ensure access to higher education to the American black population in a context of racial segregation. Today, they remain pillars of educational equity. In the field of artificial intelligence, lack of diversity is a widely documented problem: algorithms tend to reproduce prejudices when trained with homogeneous data or when their development teams do not reflect society. By creating an AI institute, NCCU directly attacks this gap, ensuring that historically marginalized communities participate in the construction of technologies that will shape the future.
Siobahn Day Grady, who also works as a researcher and academic, emphasized that the inauguration is not only a feat of the university, but of the entire higher education system. In her statements, she reinforced that the institute will serve as a reference for other institutions that wish to integrate ethics and responsibility to the development of AI. For her, human-centered AI is not an abstract concept, but a practice that must be present from basic education to advanced research.
Concern for an ethical and responsible AI has gained ground in international forums. Recently, young people at the UN have set new AI standards for the future of work and education, signaling that civil society no longer wants to leave technological decisions only in the hands of large corporations. The NCCU Institute adds to this movement, showing that universities with inclusive profile can lead research in AI. For Brazil, the example serves as inspiration: institutions such as public universities and federal institutes already have a central role in the formation of researchers, but they still need specific spaces to discuss AI with a focus on social responsibility.
