I AI Act comes into force: what changes for companies using AI generative
European rules for AI begin to apply with specific rules for language models, requiring transparency and audits.
The IA Act, the world's most comprehensive legislation on artificial intelligence, officially entered into force on April 1, 2026. The regulation classifies AI systems by risk level and imposes proportional obligations for developers and implementers.
What Changes in Practice
For founder model developers
For companies that use generative AI
Penalties
Fines can reach 7% of the company’s overall revenue — more severe than GDPR, which limits it to 4%.
Impact on Brazil
Although the legislation is European, Brazilian companies that serve customers in the EU or use models of affected companies will feel the effects. The PL 2338/2023, under process in the Brazilian Senate, uses the IA Act as a direct reference.
Market reaction
OpenAI, Google and Meta have already announced compliance tools. Anthropic went further and published all of Claude's security documentation proactively, which analysts classified as "compliance by design".
