Explosion of synthetic content concerns experts

The global electoral scenario faces a new and alarming threat: political depressions are multiplying at an accelerated pace. Organizations specialized in fact checking have recorded a 300% increase in the detection of this type of content manipulated by artificial intelligence in recent weeks, a number that lights the red light to the integrity of democratic processes in several countries.

The situation is particularly critical considering the election calendar of 2024, with important requests scheduled in various nations. The growing ease of creating fake videos, audios and images using generating AI tools has become a potential weapon for mass misinformation, capable of influencing public opinion and undermining trust in democratic institutions.

Experts call for urgent regulation

In view of the exponential growth of these manipulated contents, specialists in technology, digital security and electoral law have been calling for urgent regulation. The main concern is that the speed of dissemination of deepfakes far exceeds the current ability to detect and combat this type of misinformation.

According to analysts, the problem lies not only in the creation of false content, but also in the increasing sophistication of these productions. Modern Deepfakes are able to accurately imitate frightening gestures, facial expressions and even speech patterns of public figures, making it virtually impossible for ordinary citizens to distinguish the real from synthetic without specialized tools.

The lack of clear regulatory frameworks in many countries leaves the electoral authorities without adequate instruments to act quickly against the dissemination of content manipulated during campaigns, creating an environment conducive to electoral manipulation.

Platforms announce labelling measures

Responding to public pressure and authorities, the main social media platforms announced new policies to identify and label content generated or manipulated by artificial intelligence. Measurements include visual markers that alert users when viewing synthetic material, as well as automated detection systems.

Among the actions envisaged are the obligation of content creators to declare when using generational AI tools, penalties for those who create deepfakes with intent to deceive, and partnerships with fact-checking organizations for real-time verification.

However, experts question whether these measures are sufficient. The effective implementation of labelling systems faces significant technical challenges, and there are concerns about the ability of platforms to monitor billions of content published daily.

The challenge of digital literacy

In addition to technological and regulatory solutions, there is a growing consensus that the digital education of the population is fundamental. Media literacy initiatives that teach citizens to identify signs of manipulation and verify sources are considered essential to create a human barrier against misinformation, complementing technical and legal efforts in combating political deepfakes.
