AWS has launched a new weapon against cloud waste: AWS FinOps Agent, now available in public. It is an artificial intelligence agent that searches AWS accounts for unexplained peaks of cost, crosses usage and configuration data, and points out exactly what caused the anomaly — and suggests how to repair it.

How does FinOps Agent AWS work in practice?

Developed to integrate with AWS Cost Explorer and AWS Trusted Advisor, FinOps Agent uses a generative AI to simulate the reasoning of an experienced cost analyst. When it detects a deviation from the budget or historical expenditure, the agent initiates an autonomous investigation: resource metrics query, checks for recent changes in infrastructure (such as resizing instances or activation of services), and crosses this information to isolate the root cause. In seconds, he delivers a report with the diagnosis and correction recommendations — for example, disconnect idle resources, migrate to reserved instances or adjust scheduling policies.

According to the official AWS blog (https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws-cloud-financial-management/aws-finops-agent-is-now-public-preview/), the tool was tested internally in real scenarios and managed to reduce the average time of identification of anomalies from hours to few minutes. AWS states that the solution is especially useful for FinOps and engineering teams dealing with multiple accounts and complex environments.

FinOps Agent AWS: Impact and benefits for Brazilian companies

Cloud cost is one of the biggest challenges for fast-growing companies. In Brazil, the adoption of AWS grows every quarter, but many companies still operate without efficient financial governance tools. The FinOps Agent attacks precisely this neck: it automates the detection and correction of unnecessary spending, releasing analysts for strategic tasks.

In addition, the agent can be triggered directly on the AWS console — no manual scripts or settings required. For teams that already suffer from the cost leakage caused by unauthorized AI initiatives — a phenomenon known as Shadow AI — the tool offers an additional layer of control.

FinOps Agent AWS features in the public preview

In the preview version, FinOps Agent offers:

  • Autonomous investigation of cost anomalies capable of generating reports in natural language;
  • Actionable recommendations that can be applied with one click or integrated into AWS Systems Manager workflows;
  • Support for customizable alerts via AWS Budgets and Amazon SNS;
  • Integration with AWS Organizations for multi-account analysis.
  • AWS plans to add proactive suggestions based on usage patterns throughout the previous, but has not yet released a date for general availability.
